Quick answer

When your bill and EOB totals differ, check whether the bill includes uncovered services, whether it was generated before the EOB, or whether the provider did not apply the contractual adjustment.

Add Up Both Documents Separately

Create a simple list. On one side, list every service and amount from the EOB. On the other side, list every service and amount from the bill. Compare the totals and identify which specific lines are causing the gap.

Check for Uncovered Services

If the bill is higher, the difference may be services that were not covered by your plan. These would appear on the bill but not in the patient responsibility section of the EOB.

Resolve Before Paying

Do not pay the bill until you understand and agree with every charge. Once you have identified the cause, contact the provider or insurer as needed.
